Local dialling appear on its way out as a result of a lack of phone numbers

Ofcom has announced that a number of regions of Britain won’t be capable of make local calls without the need for the area code as phone numbers in some areas are running out.

Bournemouth will start to see the system roll out next year, with many other areas which are short of numbers including Aberdeen, Bradford, Brighton, Cambridge and Milton Keynes looking set to join the scheme by 2016.

A number of other areas have also been presented as possibly demanding the use of area codes over the next 10 years, but places including London, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham and Edinburgh aren’t affected as they have smaller area codes.

Ofcom also declared more phone number providers have been putting strain on the supply of numbers and some of them have been keeping hold of numbers and it seems it is things like this which have led to the shortage. To deter this, Ofcom will now be charging providers 10p for each number to ensure they use numbers more efficiently, a cost which won’t be transferred onto the public.
