Roys wins Lower Division Trophy

Marsh United bowler Ken Roys defeated Dennis Lomax of New Mill WMC in the final of the Lower Division Trophy held at Longwood BC.

Eight bowlers had fought their way through qualifying rounds played since early June in the print-pod sponsored tournament that had attracted over 60 bowlers from the lower divisions of the Huddersfield Veterans Bowling Associations 10-man competition and their 6-man leagues.

Lomax and New Mill colleague Mark Warrender were first on the green with Lomax finishing 21-7 winner over his clubmate in the quarter-final.

Brockholes Graham Sykes (whose brother Chris won this competition in vastly different weather conditions 12 months ago) accounted for Chris Jepson of Thorpe Green. Sykes had a two-point advantage on the handicap and that difference told in the end with the Brockholes bowler finishing a 21-19 winner.

Roys took on John Hunsley – the only bowler from the Longwood club to feature and whose handicap was adjusted accordingly – in the quarter-final with the Marsh United bowler progressing 21-15.

That scoreline was replicated in the final quarter-final in which Marsh Libs’ Paul Crosland defeated John Lunn of Hemplow.

Lomax accounted for Sykes 21-12 as the competition reached the last four with Roys beating Crosland 21-16.

Although Lomax recorded a double early on to lead 11-7 it soon became one-way traffic with Roys twice winning four consecutive ends to take the title.

The Huddersfield Veterans Bowling Association would like to thank referee Ray Tunnacliffe and the Longwood Bowling Club who were excellent hosts. We would also like to recognise the generosity of Chris Jepson of Thorpe Green for donating his winnings to the HVBA Kirkwood fund.
