GEORGE NASH PLAYS HIS LAST CORNER
Last April I attended a very pleasant celebration at Huddersfield Recreation’s Moldgreen Con green to present George Nash with a memorial marking his 100th birthday on 12 April. It is with regret that I now have to report his death on 6 March.
George took up bowls late in life after playing golf at Huddersfield Golf Club, Fixby. Canalside became his second home on retiring from golf where he spent many hours with friends on the bowling green and played competitively until very recently. Huddersfield Recreation threw a party for George at their home match versus Almondbury Libs.
His prowess was as a corner bowler. One Lindley BC bowler, who shall remain nameless, rues the day when bowling George, and being 15-5 up, let George have the jack only to be marched corner to corner and lose the game 15-21. I persuaded George to set the jack as a photo op and it went straight into the corner!
George was also a keen snooker player and played Bridge at a high level at Huddersfield Bridge Club until last year. His many friends in all these activities will sadly miss George.
Thanks once again for the photo from Bob Haigh and the story from Brian Faichney, another keen bowler and bridge player.
