New Mill topple Waterloo – 2024 Julie Fuller full results and picture gallery.

DIVISION TWO side New Mill picked up the Julie Fuller Trophy at Skelmanthorpe Windmill on Thursday thanks to a 60-48 success over Waterloo.

Waterloo, who currently sit third in the Division One league table, were fancied by many to overturn a ten-point handicap deficit to their rivals.

New Mill skipper Dennis Lomax and partner David Thorpe dominated their opponents John Mitchell and John Heap. It was close early on with the New Mill duo just one point ahead of the Waterloo pair after seven ends, but back-to-back three points saw the Division Two bowlers surge into a 11-4 lead. A full house on the 12th end left the Waterloo bowlers eleven points in arrears at 16-5 with Lomax and Thorpe eventually easing to a 21-6 success.

Robert Whiteley and John Belfield looked likely winners as they appeared to hold all the aces with a triple pointer on the 14th end to lead 11-7. But their Waterloo opponents, Alan Stephenson and skipper Ian Lunn, had other ideas and recorded a full house of their own to level the match at 12-12. Whiteley and Belfield were only able to win two more ends as the Waterloo bowlers took control to win 21-15.

Glynn Manson and John Lockwood took an early 4-0 lead against New Mill pair Simon Cave and Terry Dean. But it was nip and tuck with Cave and Dean edging in front 5-4 and again at 12-8. But the next five ends saw Manson and Lockwood accumulate 11 points to close out the encounter and they soon finished 21-14 winners.

Many thanks also to our match referee for the day Pat Stephenson and also to everyone at Skelmanthorpe Windmill Bowling Club for their warm welcome, excellent facilities and much appreciated support. And finally, a big thankyou to our Julie Fuller competition sponsor Frank Greenwood.
