09 Nov Fightback of the Year 2023

Congratulations to John Topham of Greenhead Park who is our 2023 Fightback of the Year winner. John is seen above receiving his trophy this week from hvba Vice President Richard Armitage. John also received a voucher for £50 to spend at Well Bowled which he very kindly donated to his Greenhead Park club.

Our 2023 winner came through in the September round of the competition, the final round of the season. John almost didn’t enter and his efforts may have gone under the radar had it not been for a timely prompt from a member of the opposing team – one Richard Armitage as it turned out.

John was in a group of six finalist all of which had achieved remarkable comebacks during this season. It was certainly no easy job selecting a winner for Nick Blackburn of Well Bowled who is our sponsor and judge of this competition. The size of the lead extended by the opposition was naturally a factor, but then also the twists and turns of each game, the number of ends endured, home or away advantage, nibbling slowly back into contention as an individual bowler, or delivering crushing four point ends as a pair. Each scorecard told its own story. Every one of our finalists had delivered a fantastic fight back this year, but in the end there could be only one winner – well done John!
