FRANK GRIFFIN

It is with great sadness that we have to report the passing of one of the stalwarts of Huddersfield bowling – Frank Griffin who died on 1 November.

There is no doubt that the Huddersfield Bowling Association will rank Frank as one of their most prolific trophy winners and he continued this dominance when becoming a veteran. Our records show Frank winning the Rosebowl in 2006 and 2015, the Select Players trophy (now the John Hoyle Trophy) in 2006 and 2009 and the Pairs trophy in 2012 with his Waterloo teammate Mick McCluskey.

At the representative level Frank played in the Huddersfield Away team for nearly 20 years in the Yorkshire Inter-District Veterans league. He was also selected to play for the county for 5 years or so including 2011 and 2013 when they won the veterans county championship.

At the national level Frank won the BCGBA Jack and Jean Isherwood trophy in 2008, this is widely regarded as the pinnacle of veterans bowling.

Frank donated the HVBA Team Knockout Trophy to our association but at what date is not known by the writer, the comp has been run since 1973 when Frank was ‘nobut’ a lad!

He’ll be sadly missed on and around the green both at Waterloo and in the HVBA individual trophies. May he rest in peace.

We will post details of the funeral arrangements when known.

The photograph shows Frank lifting the J & J Isherwood trophy in 2008 from Bowlers World with kind permission of the Huddersfield Examiner and supplied by Dave Parkin.
