26 Aug GOLCAR LIBS TEAM KO CHAMPIONS
On Thursday 24 August Golcar Libs A team overcame Cowcliffe Libs in what turned out to be a one-sided final to win the Team Knockout Trophy for the second year running. The trophy had new sponsors this year and was hosted by Kirkheaton Con on a day which looked decidedly gloomy at the start but turned into a lovely sunny afternoon.
The green was in immaculate order and the hospitality matched the the quality of the event. Cowcliffe came into the event after a poor run of form whilst Golcar looked to be streaking to another championship on the trot. The match followed the form book but at the half-way stage after the four singles there was only 4 points difference after adding in Cowcliffes 9 points better handicap so at that stage it was anyone’s game at 68-72.
After the break the three pairs held centre stage but Golcar soon established a lead in all three games. Our President Frank Greenwood led the way partnered by Mick Chapman playing Graham Sigsworth and John Burnett in what proved to be the keenest fought contest of the day. Golcar proved too strong in all three pairs matches and only lost one singles match to Derrick Hewitt beating Ray Whitwam.
The writer asked Tony Butterfield, the sponsor of the competition, to present cheques to both teams and the trophy to Robert Senior, the captain of Golcar. He thanked the hosts for their hospitality on the day, the greenkeepers Garry Senior and his apprentice Tony Butterfield. On thanking the referee Ray Tunnacliffe he remarked that this was the first final of the season where Ray had managed to keep dry.
