12 Jun HUDDERSFIELD PLAY OUT A SCORE DRAW WITH WEST RIDING
On Friday 9 June Huddersfield came up against what they considered their main rivals for the championship and whilst they played out a 28-28 draw over the Home and Away fixtures Leeds sneaked up on the rails to pip Huddersfield by 2 points at the top of the table.
A report from our Home team manager David Armitage follows:
West Riding are the best team we have played so far this year and a home win of 17 – 11 compensated with an away loss of 11 – 17 so honours were even with 28 points each.
The green was the quickest we’ve seen this year and caught quite a few players out. If you could bowl a length you were picking points up. Anything past the jack seemed to trundle on for ever and what looked like a good wood could end up in the gutter.
2 winners each in the first 4. Credible 21 – 8 win for Alan Bamforth and Stephen Haigh won to 18. Peter Kain will be kicking himself for letting his game get out of his grasp but credit to Alan Thompson for fighting back from 19 – 12 down to win 21 – 20. Close game for John Bloomer but lost out to current Huddersfield Over 70’s champion Graham Hirst.
3 winners in back 4. Good to see Eddie Haigh back in the team and after a slow start (12 – 4 down) won 21 -16 against Ian Briggs. Graham Sigsworth and Ray Whitwam had comfortable wins but Barry Gibson couldn’t cope with the pace of the green and lost to 4.
League Table after 3 games show
1 Leeds 119
2 Huddersfield 117
3 West Riding 104
4 Bradford 103
5 Halifax 97
6 Wakefield 47
7 Skipton 43
8 Castleford 42.
Our next game is against Wakefield and are hoping for a good result.
Thanks to Thongsbridge for hosting and the referee Glenis Philbin for deputising for our usual referee.
The following report is from Alan Sharpe, the Away team manager at The Harold Club, Low Moor.
What a great result even though we lost 17-11 after the mauling we had last year we came back with a bang. Tim Poulter losing to their best player M. Robinson to 9-21. Roger Stopford losing to 15-21. Our Captain winning to 21 – 13 and Tony Butterfield won to 21-18.
Our second four G.Senior won 21 -20. Edwin Haigh winning to 21- 17. J. Burnett making his debut played exceptionally well losing 15-21 and D. Hewitt losing to 9-21.
What a green no one got near even the home players found it very hard, our next match is against Wakefield hopefully getting a result against them in ending my report 28 points each is a great result.
