29 May HUDDERSFIELD vs CASTLEFORD MATCH REVIEW
There’s no news like old news!

Photo shows Peter Kain who played number 1 with his opponent John Lynch and the referee Ray Tunnacliffe at the start of the game. John Lynch got off to a good start and was 10 – 3 up after 10 ends then Peter pulled it back and got in front 16 – 12 after 20 ends then a great bowl from John won the Jack and from there led well giving Peter no room and won 20 – 18. No disgrace for Peter but John was a worthy winner
Peter was our only loser as Huddersfield won all the other games. We were comfortably in front after 10 ends in all the games and only Barry Gibson came under any pressure with his opponent having a late 8 run but Barry dug in and won to 14. Ray Whitwam and Steven Haigh won to 8 and shared the sweep.
A good day for Huddersfield with the away side winning 19 – 9 and after 2 games are leading the league table by 9 points from Leeds in 2nd place but we can’t be complacent the teams we have played aren’t the top teams and our next opponents West Riding will be a tougher game.
Thanks to everyone at Thongsbridge for hosting the game and the groundsman for the excellent bowling surface.

Away team
Our second match was against Castleford at Savile Park hoping to have a good result to carry on from the one we had against Skipton. Our first four gave us a good start with P Hopkinson winning 21-3. Tim Poulter winning to 21-11 and Roger Stopford winning 21-15 giving us a 34 point start. Our fourth sadly lost to 18-21. After a break for half time our second four went to the green, David Pollard lost 13-21. and our captain Malcolm Gilbert losing 7-21 making big inroads into our aggregate score, Derek Hewitt pulling back from 12-15 running out to 21-15 and Tony Butterfield winning 21-12. Huddersfield won the match 5 winners against 3 making the tie 19-9 to Huddersfield. Our next will be against last years winners West Riding so we will have to be on our best form to give us a result.
Report from Alan Sharpe, away team Manager
Spectators often ask about the scoring system for the Yorkshire County Veterans league as it is different to other competitions.
There are 28 points for each match
10 points for the team with the highest aggregate
10 margin points awarded for each 8 or part of 8 of the winning margin and the remainder to the losing team.
Each winner gets 1 point
The Huddersfield home result is a good example:
Winning 165 – 102 gives us 10 points for highest aggregate, 8 points additional margin (165 – 102 = 63 means another 8 points) and 7 winners.
10 + 8+ 7 = 25 points for Huddersfield and the other 3 for Castleford.
