LOCKWOOD RETAIN TEAM KNOCKOUT

Lockwood Cons overcame a tough Longwood team to retain the trophy on a wonderful September day at a resplendant Lindley Bowling Club.

The competition follows the same format as 10-man league matches in having three pairs and four singles matches but the title is determined solely on aggregate score. The top 32 teams in the 10-man league compete for the trophy with handicaps ranging from scratch to 20.

The three pairs took to the green first and it really was a tight affair when they came off, Longwood winning two of the three but leading by a meagre two chalks.

Two chalks never looked enough to win against the might of the Lockwood singles, each of the players being inter-district caps and the result never looked in doubt when Peter Kain took off Ian Briggs to 7. Graham Howe was the only Longwood winner in the singles which left the overall score 132 to Lockwood and 119 to Longwood which included their 5 start.

The scorecards was:

M Cox 21 v D Walkden 13
P Kain 21 v I Briggs 7
E Haigh 21 v S Gledhill 14
A Bamforth 12 v G Howe 21
K Beaumont & R Walsh 21 v A Crowther & R Haigh 17
D Gibson & M Fisher 19 v J Ollerenshaw & I Crawford 21
J Conneely & B Jenkins 17 v T Crowther & J Hunsley 21
Total scores Lockwood Con (scr) 132. Longwood (+5) 119

Our picture shows Dougie Mellor, the Lockwood honorary captain receiving the trophy from Alan Sharpe, our Association president.

Our thanks go to Lindley Bowling Club for being perfect hosts and delivering a perfect green for the competition and to our Competition Secretary David Sykes who retires at the end of the season – applicants are invited to emulate David’s contribution. Full training will be given and a small fee.
