03 Oct MICK COX WINS JOHN HOYLE MEMORIAL TROPHY
The rain delayed John Hoyle Memorial Trophy was played out on Sunday 2 October in sunshine on a rapidly drying Huddersfield Recreation green which was a marked contrast to what we left on Friday.
The quarter finals were reduced to two by the non appearance of Kevin Brown and also by Roy Sutton not being available on the original date but who did turn out to support the event. Frank Greenwood and Malcolm Gilbert received byes through to the semi-finals whilst Mick Cox was beating Garry Senior in one quarter final and Frank Griffin beating Tim Poulter in the other.
Frank Greenwood lost out to Malcolm Gilbert 19-21 in a tightly fought semi-final whilst Mick Cox beat Frank Griffin by a slightly wider margin 21-15.

Our president Alan Hirst called finalists to the green.
The final was keenly contested between Malcolm, the captain of the Inter-District away team and Mick Cox, the former captain of the Inter-District home team. It went the way of the current holder Mick Cox 21-15.
For the presentation Alan Hirst invited Jonathan and Jeremy Hoyle to the green and they were accompanied by John’s grandsons. Other members of John’s family also attended the event that they have now sponsored for two years. A raffle on the day raised £90 and with the generous support of Huddersfield Recreation and the entry fees £273 was raised towards our target of £500 for Kirkwood Hospice. A further donation will be given by the Association along with the proceeds of another raffle to be held at the half-yearly general meeting on 17 October.
