NEW NAMES ON THE PAIRS SHIELD

Thursday 1 June 2023 saw Andy Carter and Steve Mallinson of Marsh United lift the trophy and £120 prize at a cold but welcoming Almondbury Liberal club, sponsors of the competition.

The winning pair saw off two pairs from Longwood, Ian Crawford and Barry Tinker in the quarter finals and Alan Crowther and David Walkden in the final by the same scores 21-15. Sandwiched between these two victories saw a surprise result in the semi-final with Andy and Steve beating Graham Hirst and Les Holmes of Lowerhouses, 21-4 with the defeated pair being off scratch courtesy of their Inter-District standings.

Alan and David saw off another Inter-District pairing of Paul Rangely and Barry Gibson 21-10 in the quarter finals and the only pairing from the lower divisions, Graham Roys and Andrew Clarkson of Skekmanthorpe Windmill making a creditable appearance in the semi-final before finally succombing 21-16.

Other quarter-finalists not mentioned above were Kevin Brown and Shaun Irving of Milnsbridge and Alan Leonard and Tim Bolton of Golcar Libs, the latter pairing donating their winnings to our Kirkwood Hospice fund.

We have some photographs from the day below. If anyone would like a copy of any please email our General Secretary John Pearman who will be pleased to send you jpegs.
