Over 70’s Pairs – Revised format

At the AGM in February our club representatives indicated they were overwhelmingly in favour of trying a ‘drawn pairs’ format for the Over 70’s pairs competition. This is a format familiar to many plauers/clubs and is well received as a fun and sociable approach to a pairs competitons.

The Competition Sub-Committee have since been looking at the practicalities of trying this in 2025 and now, with the administration and organisational needs worked out, we are pleased to announce that the new format is good to go for 2025.

What does this mean?

In a ‘drawn pairs’ format bowlers will enter as individuals and then be partnered through a random draw.

The initial concept was to draw pairs that bring upper division players to pair with lower division player, with a little drafting of the odd player on the upper/lower boundary to counter any imbalance in upper vs lower numbers. However, with some feedback and further suggestions being brought to the Management Committee (essentially aimed at avoiding the need for drafting) it has been decided to tweak the format. There will be a draw, but rather than trying to pair upper with lower division bowlers, the pairings will be entirely random – but then handicapped in the usual way for pairs competitions. This will retain the intent of having a competitive event with a twist – bringing together bowlers from different clubs and different leagues, adding some fun and giving everyone a good chance of taking home some silverware.

Any Over 70’s bowler may enter and, with no requirement to have a partner, it means no-one is left on the shelf.

Entry costs £4 with entry forms available HERE . The closing date is Wednesday 23rd July. Rounds take place on 1st and 14th August.
