30 Sep RAIN STOPS PLAY
How often have we heard that phrase? Well not very often this season when comps have been re-arranged due to the heatwave but it’s happened today. Our flagship tournament, the John Hoyle Memorial Trophy has been postponed until 1.30 on Sunday 2 October.
As officials arrived for today’s scheduled final and finale to our season the rain was just starting and one small corner of the Huddersfield Recreation green was starting to puddle up. By scratching time water covered three-quarters of the green with just a few islands of grass remaining. Both players and officials were unanimous in postponing the fixture.
We might have considered bowling a lesser event at the start of the following season but the Association consider this fixture, to honour our dearly departed past President and General Secretary, the most important event in our calendar which has also become our annual charity match where we raise funds for Kirkwood Hospice.
Sunday promises to be dry with sunny spells so we hope that we’ll have a much better turnout, the players are raring to go, the programmes are printed and Huddersfield Recreation have immediately planned volunteers to cater for our every need!
What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon?
