22 Aug Flexible options for 2027 Competition Secretary Vacancy

Our current Competition Secretary Paul English has decided to step down from his role this coming February. We would like to thank Paul for all the time, effort and commitment he has given to the league and its competitions over the past three seasons.
As you know, our league is run entirely by volunteers, and it is only through people giving their time that we are able to organise the league fixtures and competitions that make up a season. Until Paul stepped in at the start of 2023 we were faced with having to drop the majority of competitions from that year’s calendar. During his time Paul has not only enabled the running of competitions but also brought many improvements to the way they are organised.
Paul will be leaving our competitions in excellent shape and has kindly given us plenty of advance notice. This gives us a great opportunity to bring some new volunteers on board with plenty of time to learn the ropes before the 2027 season gets underway next spring.
How you can help
There are seven singles/pairs competitions across the season, and we are very flexible about how the role can be organised. There are three options:
- One person can take on the full role.
- Two people who are happy to work together can come forward as a job-share and divide the responsibilities between them.
- Individual volunteers can take responsibility for just one or two competitions of their choice.
If you are interested in a job-share, we would particularly encourage the two people involved to come forward together. That way, you can decide between yourselves how you would like to divide the work and make sure the arrangement suits you both.
Equally, you don’t need to take on the whole role. Taking responsibility for one or two competitions is a relatively small commitment and could be an ideal way to become involved without taking on too much.
What does it involve?
The role includes:
- Registering competition entries
- Booking greens and referees
- Organising the draw
- Collecting entry fees
- Updating Bowlsnet
- On the day of a ‘Final’ you’ll be part of a small team of committee members all helping to make the day run smoothly.
The competitions are managed through Bowlsnet, but you don’t need to be an expert. The system is not overly complicated and, importantly, full training and support will be provided during and after the handover period.
There will be plenty of opportunity to learn how everything works and make sure you are comfortable and up to speed well before the new season starts.
Most importantly, as stated above, this isn’t necessarily about finding one person to take on the full competition calendar. There are several ways we can share the responsibility, and we’d be as happy to have a few people each doing a manageable amount as one person to do it all. The position is supported by an honorarium of £650 for the year (which would be split pro-rata given a job split).
If you think you could help (or would like more information) — whether by taking on the full role, coming forward with someone else to share it, or simply looking after one or two competitions please get in touch:

Filling this position is critical if we are to run competitions in 2027. Every volunteer makes a difference, and a little help from a few people can make a big difference.
