Andy Lumb left it until the very last end to complete a remarkable day at Holmfirth Bowling Club, coming from behind throughout the final before finally edging Mike Street 21-20 to lift the Huddersfield Veterans Rosebowl.

Lumb’s route to the final had been relatively straightforward. He opened with a convincing 21-9 quarter-final win over David Walkden, before beating Edwin Haigh 21-12 in the semi-final.

Street had a rather more eventful journey. He survived a 21-20 quarter-final against Mick Ward, then overcame Paul Rothery 21-15 in the semi-final to earn his place in the final.

And Street looked well placed to complete the job.

With the handicap in play, he established a healthy advantage and, after ten ends, led 13-4. By the 14th end he’d stretch this even further to lead to 17-5. Lumb had been chasing the game from the outset and, for most of the final, it looked as though he would have to settle for second place.

But them came the fight-back. Taking control of the next seven ends Lumb added eight points. 17-13 and all of a sudden there was hope.

The two traded ends as Street inched towards the finish line. With Street 20-17 up it was looking like Lumb would need something special and he duly delivered to draw level at 20-20 for the final end.

Then, having spent the entire game behind, he finally went in front.

One end, one crucial wood, and a 21-20 victory.

It was the perfect ending to a superb day: three wins, an incredible final comeback and a Veterans Rosebowl won by the narrowest possible margin.

Behind the scenes we have our Competition Secretary Paul English to thank for coordinating the Rosebowl as well as our other competitions. Paul will be stepping down at the end of this season and we are in need of one or more volunteers to help in 2027. We are very flexible about how the role can be organised. Whilst One person could take on the full role other options are possible. Two people who are happy to work together could work as a job-share or individual volunteers could take responsibility for just one or two competitions of their choice.
